Policies and Procedures for Audio E-Reserves

Policies for Audio Reserve Materials
- Copyright - Initial and subsequent use of audio materials for electronic transmission will be pursuant to the U.S. Copyright Act including its Fair Use analysis and/or the TEACH Act provisions. The library also acts in accordance with the 2004 statement issued by the Music Library Assocation entitled “Statement of the Digital Transmission of Electronic Reserves.”
- Access - Audio Reserves are available for classes and studios requiring library audio reserves Only university faculty/staff/ and students who are registered for a class will have access to the audio reserves. Access is through the libraries’ catalog by course-specific password only.
- Ownership of original recordings - The library will not stream second generation copies of commercially produced recordings. Material placed on reserve must be part of the collections of the library or the faculty member. The library will attempt to purchase a copy of the item when it is available and appropriate for the permanent collection. Every attempt will be made to purchase recordings for the library in the event that neither the library nor the faculty member owns the recording. Typical processing times for such materials may run two to four weeks.
- Types and lengths of recordings - The library will digitize non-commercial compact disk compilations owned by an instructor that includes complete track listing, artist, title and source. The library will digitize performances (partial or entire) of all non-dramatic literary or musical works. Dramatic musical works (including opera, musicals, music video) may be digitized in reasonable and limited portions. Full works may be digitized when appropriate permissions of the Copyright holder have been obtained. The library will not digitized commercially sold anthologies in their entirety.
- Format - All materials will be uploaded in individual mp3 tracks.
- Processing time – Course reserve requests are accepted at all times. They are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. For materials owned by the library or the instructor, please allow at least two weeks for the first three weeks of a semester and three to five work days for materials submitted after that point.
Submitting Materials for Reserve
- Course Reserve materials may be submitted in the form of CDs, LPs, cassette tapes, DAT tapes or electronic files (mp3 or wav). We will also link requested items from Naxos Music Library and Classical Music Library.
- Submit a separate Audio E-Reserve Request Form for each course. Submission of the form indicates acceptance of the conditions in the Statement of Copyright Compliance that accompanies the form.
