ANNE PHILLIPS McMATH

Anne Phillips McMath was born December 20, 1920, in Slate Spring, Mississippi. She graduated from the local high school and continued with her studies for another two years at Mississippi State College for Women. She met her future husband, Sidney Sanders McMath, in Washington, D.C., while working as a congressional secretary on Capitol Hill. They were married on October 6, 1944, and on January 10, 1949, Sid McMath became the thirty-fourth Governor of Arkansas. Anne McMath played the role of first lady from 1949 to 1953. Since leaving public life she has been active in various civic organizations.

THE COLLECTION

Anne Phillips McMath, former first lady of Arkansas, donated her papers to Special Collections on July 14, 1989.

The collection includes research files created by Anne McMath while writing her biographical sketches of the first ladies of Arkansas. These were published as First Ladies of Arkansas: Women of Their Times. Little Rock: August House, 1989.

This series contains research material accumulated during the author's work on her book First Ladies of Arkansas: Women of Their Times. Included are the original drafts of the narrative, handwritten notes, correspondence pertaining to the author's research, questionnaires, newspaper and magazine clippings (as well as photocopies), and other printed material; photographs and slides. Also included is the incomplete manuscript of the book.
