INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARKANSAS STATE MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION

The Arkansas State Music Teachers Association was founded in 1915 by twelve Arkansas music teachers in Little Rock, Arkansas.  In addition to working for musical advancement in Arkansas, the goals of the Arkansas State Music Teachers Association include developing improved methods of musical instruction, supporting members in establishing standards for music teachers, and encouraging education in Arkansas public schools.




INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Virginia Queen of Arkadelphia, Arkansas donated the ASMTA Records in 1982 while serving as president of the organization.

The papers consist primarily of the president's correspondence  and membership files. In addition, they contain membership and certification lists, educational materials and tests used for music teacher certification, and news clippings.

This series includes correspondence of the presidents of the ASMTA, 1932-1968. Much of the correspondence pertains to membership recruitment and teacher certification. Also included are Board and District minutes as well as treasurer's reports, a constitution, revised constitution, and Bonding documents.

This series includes the folders kept by ASMTA on its membership.  The personal data sheets are in modified resume form and are arranged alphabetically.  The card files of members document dues- paying members from 1925-1951, and a 1954 questionnaire concerns the cost of music lessons in different parts of the state.
