Manuscript Collection 727
INFORMATION ABOUT CORA PINKLEY CALL
Cora Pinkley Call was born in Winona Springs (Carroll County), the youngest of George Washington and Mary Jane Harp Pinkley's ten children. Due to a rare illness, Call was taken out of school at an early age and spent most of her time out of doors studying plant and animal life. In 1925 Call began contributing articles that primarily dealt with nature and gardening to national newspapers and magazines. She later began using three pen names; Karel Lowe, Sallie Green, and Marjorie Thorn, as well as her own. Call founded and was life president of the Ozark Writers and Artists Guild of Eureka Springs. In 1953, she and Edith Bestard began Ozark Gardens, a nationally distributed newspaper that was devoted to gardening and birds. Call was married to Miles Oliver Call and had five children; Peggy Joyce, George Patrick, Paul, Philip Dale, and Betty Jane.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION
This collection contains manuscripts, essays, poems, drafts, notes, photographs, genealogical information, and clippings that Call wrote or used for her research and writings. Broadsides are also included in this collection. A significant portion of the collection is comprised of manuscript drafts of her writings. Of special note are her personal and nature diaries, late nineteenth century photographs of Eureka Springs and Fayetteville (Washington County), and a scrapbook of Eureka Springs lyceum performer Thomas Elmore Lucy. Call's two scrapbooks contain clippings and other material relating to the Ozark Writers and Artists Guild, and items belonging to her daughters, Peggy and Betty.
Papers and photographs of Cora Elizabeth Pinkley Call (1892-1966) of Eureka Springs (Carroll County), Arkansas, were donated by the Eureka Springs Preservation Society to Special Collections in April, 1987.
