Lorna Lack Cates Papers

Correspondence, Legal Documents, Receipts, Photographs, 1853-1919

Manuscript Collection 784

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

The Lorna Lack Cates Papers were donated by Lorna Lack Cates of Leslie (Searcy County), Arkansas on November 3, 1987.

Lorna Lack Cates' collection serves as a record of her ancestors, specifically the Woolvertons and Halbrooks, who lived initially in Tennessee but eventually settled in Arkansas.  The orientation of the papers is commercial rather than personal, the relatively large number of receipts attesting to economic growth in the South in general and in Arkansas in particular during the second half of the nineteenth century and first two decades of the twentieth.

Materials in the collection include tax receipts, promissory notes, poll tax receipts, accounts receivable and paid, and other documents from Henry County, Tennessee and Van Buren and Conway Counties in Arkansas.  William Louis Woolverton's account book is included, as are teachers' contracts and contracts for farm and construction work.  A marriage license and a small collection of photographs supplement the collection.

Prepared by Janet G. Tucker, Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in June, 1988.
