Maude Kendrick Coffin was born in Virginia on April 19, 1888, the
youngest of James and Josephine Barker Kendrick's six children.
Her father and older brother left for Arkansas in 1892, and the
rest of the family moved west and settled in St. Paul (Madison
County) in 1900. The Kendricks built and ran a mill and lumber
company where Maude Kendrick and the rest of the family worked
and lived.
In 1920, she married a World War I veteran, Harry Coffin of St.
Paul. During their marriage, they operated a bakery near the
University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) campus and later in Lincoln
(Washington County). They had four children, Fern, Fairy, Wayne
(Buddy) and Josephine (Babe). In the late 1920s they moved to
Fayetteville and bought a house on School Street. Maude Coffin
lived the rest of her life at this location.
Fairy Coffin married J.Q. Lynd in 1943. Lynd later earned his
Ph.D and became a soil scientist, with Fairy assisting in his
research. During the next thirty years the Lynds worked on
research regarding antibiotics in soil microorganisms, and cancer
research. Fairy became a highly recognized scientist, and
presented her research findings to scientific conferences in the
United States and Europe.
