minutes, budgets, and development plans concerning the establishment and
activities of the Center for Cultural and Technical Interchange Between
the East and West (East-West Center). The EWC was established by
Congress in 1960 as a national educational institution to foster better
relations and understanding between Americans and Asians in the Pacific
area through programs of cooperative study, training, and research.
The center operated under a grant-in-aid agreement between the secretary
of state and the University of Hawaii Board of Regents until it became
a public educational nonprofit corporation in 1975. Other files concern
the East-West Center Press and EWC programs and grantees. Arranged
