Series 1. American Specialist Program (Short-Term American Grantees-STAGs) (Boxes 138-151)
Correspondence, memoranda, reports, grantee project proposals, lists, statistics, and other records pertaining to the State Department's American Specialist Program (Short-Term American Grantee-STAG), including materials associated with program plans, policies, guidelines, and follow-up of program's effectiveness. Some program files are arranged alphabetically by name of country or geographic area. The grantee files are arranged alphabetically by name of specialist. Included also are a few files at the end of the inventory by field of study or art, by title of show or by name of festival or competition.
The American Specialist Program was established in 1950 as a worldwide
activity by the Department of State for the purpose of sending private
American citizens abroad, primarily as lecturers or consultants, usually
for short periods of time. Alumni of the program include Aaron Copland,
Robert Frost, Wilma Rudolph, John Steinbeck, Virgil Thomson, and Mal Whitfield.
The name of the program changed from the American Specialist Program to
the Short-Term American Grantee (STAG) Program and back again in 1975 to
its original title.
