General correspondence, memoranda, minutes, agenda, member files, legislation, reports, and other materials concerning the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) on International Book and Library Programs.  The GAC was established in October 1962 under authority of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hays) to advise the Department of State, the U.S. Information Agency, and the Agency for International Development on policies and operations of its overseas book and library programs and to serve as liaison between the government and the book industry and library profession.  Significant subjects include the GAC's Book Committee, the GAC Task Force on the Florence Agreement, and the Interagency Book Committee (IBC).  Some files pertain to the development and implementation of a national policy statement on international book and library activities.  Other files concern book programs in Latin America, Africa, and Asia as well as organizations and conferences, including the Helsinki Conference.  Arranged in five series.

General correspondence and background materials concern the establishment and activities of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) on International Book and Library Programs and include materials on its Book Committee, the development of a national policy statement on international book and library activities, and committee sponsorship of book programs in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
