THE DeWITT MOTHERS' CLUB

In 1916, a number of DeWitt area women organized the "Twentieth Century Mothers' Club." A social and civic organization, the club became affiliated with the Association of Federated Women's Clubs in 1919. It sponsored many local projects, including a soup kitchen for school children during the Great Depression, participation in the Community Improvement Program sponsored by the Sears Roebuck Foundation, and the sponsorship of art contests in the DeWitt area. Foremost among it accomplishments, however, was the sponsorship of the DeWitt City Library, which it helped establish in 1926.

THE COLLECTION

The original copies of the DeWitt Mothers' Club Papers are housed in the DeWitt Public Library. They were loaned to Special Collections for microfilming December 2, 1987 by Ms. Edra Lumsford, librarian of that institution.

The papers include twenty-two scrapbooks and approximately four linear inches of documents. The documents are comprised mainly of reports written for the state and national A.F.W.C. offices describing the club's activities for the previous year. The club's minute books comprise a separate series (Series 2), as do the club's scrapbooks and guest books (Series 3).

Researchers are encouraged to cite the collection as follows: DeWitt Mothers' Club Papers, microfilm edition, Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville.

Processed by Leon C. Miller, March 1988. Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
