Mary Dengler Hudgins (1901-1987), a native of Hot Springs,
graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1924. She was a free
lance writer, librarian, and collector of materials pertaining to
Hot Springs and to Arkansas. She was especially interested in
Arkansas composers and musicians. She was active in the American
Association of University Women, the Arkansas Folklore Society,
and the Arkansas Historical Association.
Manuscript materials and Arkansiana, mostly pertaining to Hot
Springs and Garland County, were donated to Special Collections
by Mary D. Hudgins of Hot Springs, Arkansas, on December 18,
1984.
The massive collection originally included many duplicates filed
in different access points. Duplicates, so far as possible, were
eliminated from the collection, and every effort was made to
strike a balance between preserving original order and providing
access to the materials. The collection was divided into five
record groups: biographical material, writing and research
material, topical manuscript collections, pictures, and maps.
For earlier accessions of Mary Hudgins material, see "Arkansas
Literature and Music Correspondence," "Arkansas
Traveller Scores," "Gospel Music Research Files and Song Books," and
"Research Files."
