Moss Scrapbooks, 1910-1914

University of Arkansas Student Scrapbooks

Manuscript Collection 761

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Two scrapbooks were found in the University Archives (date of donation and name of donor unknown) and transferred to the manuscript collections.

One scrapbook apparently belonged to Lowell R. Moss, a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, who graduated in 1913 with a degree in chemistry.  The other belonged to his sister, Mildred Moss, a member of Pi Beta Phi and assistant editor of the University Weekly, who graduated in 1914.

Both scrapbooks include autographs of friends, newspaper clippings, dance and other programs, and photographs.  Lowell's includes receipts, grades, and class schedules.  Both include clippings and broadsides concerning the 1912 student strike over the expulsion of students involved with the underground newspaper X-Ray.

Some material has been removed from the scrapbooks and placed in folders:  items that had originally been laid in, heavy dance programs (for the most part, these had already fallen off the pages or torn the pages), and all photographs.  In the case of photographs originally glued to pages in Volume 2, the captions from the scrapbook pages are enclosed in quotation marks in the description of each photograph.

Prepared by Nan Lawler, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in March 1988.
