Group 4. Field Service Program (FSP) Files, 1963-1985. Boxes 95-146.

The NAFSA Field Service Program (FSP) was established in 1963 with the help of a grant from the Department of State under the authorization of the Fulbright-Hays Act. Its purpose is to assist institutions of higher learning to strengthen their programs for foreign students. The director of FSP is guided by a National Panel of Consultants, which meets annually to review the program and make suggestions, and a Steering Committee, which represents NAFSA's Executive Committee in an advisory capacity.

Eight areas of concern are recognized: (1) selection and admission of foreign students, (2) English language proficiency, (3) initial orientation, (4) academic and personal advising, (5) housing, (6) finances and employment, (7) American-foreign student relationships, and (8) interpretation of the United States to foreign students.

The Field Service Program uses four methods: (1) publications, particularly its Guidelines series; (2) campus consultations, visits of NAFSA workers to campuses; (3) in-service training grants to enable individuals to visit other institutions; and (4) workshops to train inexperienced or part-time foreign student advisers (one goal of NAFSA also being to promote foreign student advising as a recognized and respected profession).

There has been only minor rearrangement of folders; folder titles and the original order of the collection have been largely preserved. Arrangement is roughly chronological, then by area of activity.
