Born on September 19, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee, Stockley graduated from Marion High School, Marion, Arkansas, and also attended Texas A & M University as well as the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Harry F. Stockley enlisted in the United States Army on September 3, 1940 and completed his Officer Candidate Training at Camp Davis, North Carolina, on May 28, 1942. Afterwards he was assigned active duty and served in the US Army during World War II until February 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious achievement in connection with military operations in the Philippines in 1945 as well as the American Defense Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and many others. Harry F. Stockley died in April 1946.
The papers comprise correspondence, military records, newspapers, photographs, and memorabilia. Most of the correspondence contains Stockley’s letters which he wrote while in the army to his mother, Mrs. Charles Stockley, living at Marion, Arkansas. Many of these letters are the “V-Mail” letter format. There are also a few letters Stockley wrote to his sister Mary and one letter to Mr. and Mrs. Stockley by Capt. David W. Parkes. An index to the correspondence, prepared by Jack East III, contains a cover letter of September 28, 1980 written by Jack to other members of the family and a chronological list of Harry F. Stockley’s letters to his mother with very brief summaries. See Box 2 Folder 8. The military records contain Stockley’s ID pass issued by the War Department, ration books, his Honorable Discharge certificate and Certificate of Service, documents relating to the Bronze Star Medal award, appointment/promotion documents, letters from the War Department and the Army Service Forces, and other miscellaneous documents. The papers further contain class notes and printed lecture notes, instructions, and examinations from the Artillery Schools which Stockley attended at Camp Davis, North Carolina, and Fort Monroe, Virginia. There is also one issue of the September 24, 1944, Guinea Gold newspaper and one issue of The Texas Aggie, June 5, 1946, with Stockley’s death announcement (page 2, column 3–under Silver Taps headline). The financial papers in this collection include various receipts, insurance papers, bank deposit records, a check and savings book of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and other documents. There are nineteen black and white photographs of Stockley taken during his US and overseas military service. The few memorabilia in this collection are the Guide to Sydney and Suburbs, name and membership cards, and other items.
The Harry F. Stockley Papers were donated to the Special Collections Division by Mary Stockley East, Little Rock, Arkansas, on May 5, 2000.
Processed by Vera Ekechukwu, Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in July 2000.
