This series contains materials which pertain to the personal and professional life of Edward Durell Stone from the late 1950s until his death in 1978. Nine subseries illustrate the personal aspects of his life during this period, as well as his prominence in the architectural profession. Files also pertain to members of his family. As he and his first wife, Orlean Vandiver Stone, were divorced in 1951 only a few items are included from their relationship. Files of their two sons, Edward, Jr. and Robert are included. Edward, Jr., an internationally renowned landscape architect, collaborated with his father on numerous projects. Maria Elena Torchino Stone, Stone's second wife, took an active role in the management of the Stone firm, as well as being involved in numerous social and charitable events during their marriage. Files pertaining to their active social life in New York, East Hampton, and Europe are included in this series. Records of their two children, Hicks and Francesca, are included. Stone's third wife, Violet Campbell Moffat Stone, was an employee of the Stone firm before and during their marriage. Files pertaining to their marriage and to their daughter, Fiona, are also included in this series.
Numerous files contain records of the "Ole Stone Place," the Stone family home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Stone and his sister, Marion Holzinger, were joint owners of this and other properties in Arkansas. Karl Holzinger, Jr., Stone's nephew and fellow architect, worked with Stone on numerous projects.
Financial records, which include personal financial records, tax records, drafts of wills, and insurance records, have been arranged in separate subseries. Collectively, these document Stone's financial situation and life style during this time. Items pertaining to his vast art collection and his role as collector, connoisseur, and critic are included throughout the financial records.
Throughout this series "EDS" is a commonly used abbreviation for Edward Durell Stone, while Maria Elena Torchino Stone is referred to as "METS." Marion Holzinger, Stone's sister, addresses Stone as "Ayd" in her correspondence.
