This series contains the records of the Publicity Department from 1957 to 1974. These have been arranged into six subseries. The first four document the history, organization and management of this department and are organized chronologically. Subseries 1 pertains to materials of this department while under the direction of Maria Elena Torchino Stone (1957-1962). Subseries 2 consists of materials while Hand Brennan was administrator (1964-1966). Subseries 3 covers the period while Gerre Jones was head of the department (1967-1969). These include records of the management and organization of this department, as well as personal correspondence and records of these three individuals. General files of this department from 1972 to 1974 are filed in Subseries 4.
The files of Maria Stone, Stone's second wife, contain items which document
the events of
the Stones' marriage and their life style during this period.
Numerous files exists in which Maria Stone signed correspondence and memos
as "METS" or "Beth Taylor."
Publicity Department Project Files document the department's promotion of individual projects. Public relations material and advertising pertaining to each project is arranged by project. There is considerable overlap between this subseries and the Job Files (Series 2, Subseries 1); Data Forms (Series 2, Subseries 2); Newspaper and Magazine Articles (Series 5, Subseries 3); Photographs (Series 6); and Architectural Drawings (Series 11).
Subseries 6 consists of materials used to produce different versions of office brochures which were compiled to advertise the work of the firm to prospective clients. Also included are brochures of Edward Durell Stone, Jr. & Associates, the landscape architectural firm which collaborated with the Stone firm on numerous projects, as well as a Hill-Adams Incorporated brochure. Hill-Adams Incorporated, the architectural firm which purchased the California office of Edward Durell Stone, Inc., worked on numerous Stone projects in the United States and in the Middle East.
