Correspondence, Printed Material, and Photographs, 1882-1982

Manuscript Collection 559

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Elizabeth Bassett Williams of Fayetteville (Washington County), Arkansas, donated materials to Special Collections pertaining to her family on August 13, 1985 and April 21, 1986.

Elizabeth (Betty) Bassett Williams was a 1941 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.  She was a charter pledge of the Octagon chapter of Mortar Board and a charter member of Orchesis, an honorary dance group.  She married Franklin S. Williams, a business professor at the University.  After World War II, they lived at Camp Neil Martin, a housing complex for married students and faculty.  Mrs. Williams wrote articles for university publications, including The Traveler and The Screaming Eagle.  Her mother, Bee Irene Knerr, graduated from the university in 1916, and her younger sister, Dorothy Knerr Bryan, graduated in 1924.  Another sister, Ina Helen Knerr, attended the university in the early 1900's and was a charter member of the campus chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.  She later became head of the cataloging department at the University Library.

This collection contains correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, and programs primarily concerning the university.  Nineteen of the twenty-one photographs are by Fayetteville photographer J.H. Field.  The papers also contain broadsides, which have been removed to the broadside collection.

Prepared by Susan Lynn Parks, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in March 1989.
