Initiative Review Group V Progress Report April 30, 2001

Evaluate space requirements for the next fifteen to twenty years, including Special Collections, branch libraries (Fine Arts, Chemistry, and Physics), and remote storage facility.

Evaluation of Space - University Libraries

Mullins Library

Mullins Library was completed in 1968, when its collection was moved from Vol Walker, which is presently occupied by the School of Architecture. In 1997 an addition of 75,000 square feet was completed and is the portion which occupies the east side of the building. At the time of the addition, new technology was planned, and extensive renovation was included on the main, or lobby, floor as well as the area presently occupied by audio visual and classroom B. Total space is now 194,771.01 square feet. Growth space is sufficient for 8 to 10 years at fiscal year 2000

purchasing level, and efforts are underway to dramatically increase the purchasing level. In addition to growth by purchasing, the library serves as an overflow area for collections in branch libraries in education, fine arts, physics, and chemistry.

Level 4 has a total of 62,293.l5 square feet.

A service area is located at the information window in the Government Documents area.

Computer access and assistance area occupies 202.9 square feet.

The government documents collection and maps occupy the northeast section of Level 4.

Office and processing space for Government Documents Department occupies 1112.22 square feet.

The area for maps has 385 square feet.

Stack area for materials classed Q through Z are located on Level 4.

Two restrooms are provided for each side of the building.

Two elevators serve the east side of level 4, and 1 serves the east side.

Two conference rooms on the east side have 818.11 square feet of space

The 4 original conference rooms on the west side use 1156.33 square feet.

402A, a Custodial Supervisor's Office, has 198 square feet of space.

402B, the Development Office, 379.75 square feet of space.

472A, office for the Center for Arkansas Visual and Oral History, has 198 square feet of space.

472B, a conference room, has 380.58 square feet of space.

Seating is provided for 338 patrons, with 193 on the west and 145 on the east.

Level 4 has 2 OPAC computers on the west side. On the east side are 3 E-OSK machines and 2 OPAC computers.

Thirty-six faculty and 24 graduate carrels are available for use on Level 4

On the west side between bays 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 is a space of 1,150.5 square feet in each area for a total of 4,602 square feet.

On the east side in each space between pillars for bays 3-4, 4-5 in the west to east space is an area of 196 square feet for a total of 392 square feet. Between pillars for bays 1-2 in east to west space is an area of 72 square feet.

Between call numbers TX and Z is an area of 622.2 square feet.

The far east window region has 6 areas of each of 150.5 square feet for a total of 903 square feet.

The south window area has 445 square feet.

Problem areas - Structural configuration of the original west side provides little flexibility.

Both the stack areas and the study areas have inadequate lighting.

Little space is available to integrate both electronic and traditional sources of information for readers.

Level 3 has a total of 34,138.53 square feet.

Stacks for materials classed A through L and for oversized materials A through Z are located on Level 3.

Two restrooms are provided for each side of the building.

Two elevators serve the west side of the building, and one serves the east side.

Four conference rooms on the west side have 1082.22 square feet of space.

302A with 196.25 square feet is unoccupied.

302B, the Stacks/Student Personnel Office, has 308.51 square feet.

372A, John Harrison's Office (Development), has 231 square feet..

372B with 379.46 square feet is unoccupied.

Two conference rooms on the east side have 811.51 of space.

Seating is provided for361 patrons, with 177 on the west side and 184 on the east.

Thirty-six faculty and 24 graduate carrels are available for use on Level 3

Level 3 has 2 OPAC computers on the west side and 3 E-OSK machines on the east.

A sorting area on the west side uses 948.08 square feet of space

The area above the Periodicals Room occupies 448 square feet.

The area above the Walton Reading Room occupies 448 square feet.

On the west side between bays 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 is a space of 1,150.5 square feet in each area for a total of 4,602 square feet.

The northeast rotunda has 850.3 square and the southeast rotunda has 854.61 square feet.

On the east side in each space between pillars 1-2. 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 in the west to east space is an area of 196 square feet for a total of 784 square feet. The each area in front of the pillars on the east side is a space of 196 square feet for a total of 288 square feet.

Level 2 has a total of 40,875.82 square feet.

Level 2 is the location for both technical and public services

Technical services on the second floor include cataloging, serials, and acquisitions in an area for staff of 18 - 20. Seven offices are located in the area. In addition there is a service elevator which connects to Shipping and Receiving on Level 1.

Binding has a space of 805.49 square feet with an office. Near Binding is an office for Electronic Collections and Services and Collection Development as well a conference room of 92.76 square feet for Technical Services.

Interlibrary Loan occupies a space of 1859.36 square feet, a small enclosure for a paper shredder and an office for the head of the department.

Service areas of the second floor are located at the Reference Department, Circulation Department, Periodicals, and Interlibrary Loan, and a service window is also available for service for the Binding Department.

Circulation has an area work area of 1,014.01 square feet. In addition there are 3 offices and the Circulation Desk. A check out/in point is located on each side of Level 2.

The Periodicals Room has 2 public use computers with Internet access and 1 laser printer.

A copy room in the Periodicals Room occupies 680.83 square feet.

In the Reference Department are the Reference Desk, 10 offices, and student work areas.

The reference and are 28 public use computer terminals with Internet access, 10 OPAC computers, 2 Reserve search computers, 1 E-OSK computer, and 3 laser printers.

Seating away from the terminals in the public service area consist of 76 in Periodicals, 108 in the Reading Room, and 97 in the Reference and Reference Index areas.

Classroom A, which seats 20 in 425.10 square feet, has 10 training computers and 1 instructor's computers.

A computer lab with 1 laser printer, 20 public use stations, and a station for a lab operator are located on Level 2.

Two elevators serve the west side of the building and 1 serves the east.

Two restrooms are provided for each side of the building.

Administrative offices, a classroom of 425.14 square feet, a break room with 797.46 square feet, and a reading room with 3,383.64 feet are also located on Level 2.

A 6 place lounge chair is available on Level 2.

The Walton Reading Room has 3,383.64 square feet.

Problem areas - Some Technical Services personnel are a distance away from restrooms.

Work space is cramped in some areas of Technical Services.

No available space is available for a conservation lab in Binding.

No accommodation is present for integrating both electronic and traditional materials for readers in the Reading Room.

Administrative offices are spread out.

Structural configuration of building does not provide flexibility for a suite of administrative offices.

Structural configuration does not provide flexibility for a centralized public service area.

Offices of reference personnel are too small, lack privacy, and have poor lighting. Room 220K should be reconfigured.

Space for the computer lab is not adequate for number of stations needed.

No space is available for discrete storage of recycling bins.

Room 221 for copiers needs to be configured.

Lever 1 has a total of 57,463.51 square feet.

Special Collections and Audio Visual are 2 services areas located on Level 1.

Two restrooms are available.

Two elevators are available for public use on the west side and one service elevator to the floor above and a key operation for the east elevator are available to library personnel.

Classroom B has 10 training computers and one instructor's computer.

Room 104, the viewing room, has 798.78 square feet and seating for 52.

Room 102, which has 948.08 square feet and seating for 42, has 16 training computers and 1 instructor's computer.

Special Collections occupies a total of 13,801.93 square feet, of which 2,098 square feet are in the Reading Room, 2,022.88 square feet are in the Office/Space area., and 4,542.08 square feet are in compact shelving.

The Reading Room in Special Collections has seating for 13 patrons at 11 tables.

Rare Book Room in Special Collections has seating for 19.

Shipping and Receiving has 820.06 square feet and 265.3 square feet for supply storage.

Room 109B in Shipping and Receiving is a Custodial Room of 144.22 square feet.

Technical Services work room occupies 789.06 square feet.

Systems has 367.48 square in office space and 820.06 in additional work/storage space.

Audio Visual, which seats 24, has 2,061.74 square in its main public service and machine area. The small viewing room has seating for 299.64 square feet and seating for 11.

Audio Visual has 1 office which occupies 88.01 square feet and 1 which occupies 105.92 square feet.

Seating is available for 54 patrons in the stack area.

Level 1 has 3,755.09 square feet in compact shelving.

Problem areas - No space is available within the present configuration for a well vented

conservation lab for Special Collections..

Light in the Special Collections Reading Room is entirely artificial and inadequate.

The portion of Special Collections carved from the back of Bays 1-3 has a security risk

The Special Collections Reading Room has a low ceiling which enhances

difficult temperature control and a claustrophobic feeling.

Demand for meeting rooms in Audio Visual exceeds availability.

Rooms with space for groups of 10-30 people is unavailable.

Space for music scores and videos in Audio Visual is reaching capacity.

Space for patrons to use equipment is limited.

No work space is available in AV for student workers except at the service desk.

Space in Systems is limited for adding additional staff.

Shipping and Receiving have crowded space for adding duties and activities.

Limited space is available to integrate both electronic and traditional sources of information for readers.

Lighting in reading areas and stacks is inadequate.

The tunnel has no climate control, poor lighting, poor conditions for

reliable storage, and difficult configuration for book drop retrieval and deliveries.

Chemistry Library

Chemistry Library has a total space of approximately 3,400 square feet.

Located in Level 2 of the Chemistry Building, the Chemistry Library has expanded during the past decade from 3 rooms (210, 211, and 212) to 4 rooms (212 and of 202 across the hall. Seating is available for 35-40 patrons. There are 2 computers for patrons.

Problem areas - There is no space for expansion in the library.

Crowded conditions present problems with climate control.

Space for additional computers is not available.

Configuration of the library provides little flexibility.

Seating is crowded.

No space is available for a service desk, separate work area, or office.

Physics Library

Physics Library has a total of 1,974 square feet in three rooms.

Physics Library was renovated in the 1990s with new shelving and furnishing added at the time. The library occupies space in 221 for the main reading room, 221A for monographs, and 221B for the librarian's office.

Seating is available for 20 patrons.

Problem areas - Space for collections is inadequate.

Fine Arts Library

Fine Arts Library has a total of 2,845 square feet of space.

Fine Arts Library was renovated and enlarged in the late 1970s. As a result of crowded conditions, music was removed to Mullins Library in the 1990s.

Seating is available for 46 patrons on 2 levels, 36 of which are on the upper level.

Students have access to 3 computer stations.

Problem areas - Stack space is inadequate.

Seating is inadequate.

Wiring and space for needed computers are inadequate.

Remote Storage

Remote Storage has 10,000 square feet of space.

Remote Storage was established in the 1990s to alleviate crowding the University Libraries.

Problem areas - The space has extremely poor lighting.

Shelving is nearing capacity.

The facility has no climate control.

The Initiative Group for Evaluation of Space has examined the use of space in the University of Arkansas Libraries and has established problem areas within the libraries. We need to gather reports from the other initiative groups before we make recommendations for future spatial planning.
