INITIATIVES #1 & 2

Evaluate
effectiveness of existing library programs and analyze needs of users,
and develop the services and technical infrastructure to ensure that needs
are being met.
Objectives
Develop a plan for managing the Physics and Chemistry Libraries to respond to requests and problems already identified
- Compile a list of all existing library programs
- Review data received from the LibQual Survey to identify major user concerns; compare to information gathered in previous surveys
- Review and determine access issues, including service points, programs, and materials
- Determine priority groups of users that will be targeted for focused work on services and concerns
- Identify the programs that respond to the areas of concern expressed in surveys and determine an appropriate process for actively addressing these areas. Analyze concerns; identify those that are short-term that can be actively and immediately addressed; and identify those that are long-term that will require a more comprehensive approach.
- Identify facilities, equipment, and services still needed to support patrons with disabilities
- Identify existing or new data needed to assist in decision-making about the areas of concern
- Develop
departmental descriptions and mission statements
INITIATIVES #14 & 15

(These initiatives are combined and assigned to the Web Development
Committee. Membership of the existing WDC has been slightly revised.)
In addition to the two original initiatives-"Document all major operational
policies and procedures, and place them on the Web as appropriate" and
"Create departmental Web pages"-the charge to the WDC has included the
following: manage the graphic design, establish web protocols (such as
search engines), design templates, organize content, provide staff development
opportunities to ensure all personnel involved in web management are well
trained.
Objectives
Incorporate the issues identified by IRGs #14 and 15
- Develop
an overall plan to manage the Libraries' Web pages, including an internal
staff web page
INITIATIVE #17

Create a flexible and understandable budget process, including analyses,
projections, distribution, and reports. The process is ongoing and the
committee will establish the plan of work.
Objectives
Establish budget priorities within the operating expenditures
- Review travel and development expenditures and determine budgets needed by divisions
- By the end of the fiscal year, establish a mechanism to provide monthly reports on expenditures
INITIATIVES #16 and 18

Create a staff development and in-house training program for
library faculty and staff; support scholarly efforts of library faculty
Objectives
Determine training priorities based upon the feedback given by the support staff and faculty development groups
- Work with university personnel to provide needed training programs within the library
- Develop an orientation program for existing and new staff and faculty
- Determine criteria for faculty and professional staff to pursue scholarly efforts within the bounds of existing budgets
- Identify methods to support staff initiatives
INITIATIVE #19

Develop a library information technology infrastructure that meets
internal and external needs
Objectives
Develop a three-year technology plan, including a process for identifying and communicating computer hardware, software, and networking needs
- Develop and support a program to train computer liaisons from each library department
- Identify and address multi-media needs in the Audiovisual Department and elsewhere within the library
- Work with the library department heads to determine and establish basic computer and software competencies within departments. Work with cabinet to merge, expand, and refine lists of basic competencies to derive a library-wide list applicable for all library faculty and staff.
