The University Libraries Course Reserves Service operates in compliance with U.S. Copyright Law. Instructors are asked to accept full responsibility in complying with the provisions of the Copyright Revision Act of 1976 that governs the fair use of copyrighted objects for educational purposes.
The University Libraries Course Reserves Service provides access to supplementary course materials in support of the University's academic mission and operates in compliance with U.S. Copyright Law.
Instructors are asked to accept full responsibility in complying with the provisions of the Copyright Revision Act of 1976 that governs the "fair use" of copyrighted objects for educational purposes. There are four factors to consider when determining fair use:
- the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
- the nature of the copyrighted work;
- the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
- the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Submitting an Online Reserve Request form indicates acceptance of the conditions in the statement of copyright compliance that accompanies the form.
The library will not place materials on reserve if it judges that the nature, scope, or extent of the material is beyond the reasonable limits of fair use.
