EHRAF Ethnography and Archaeology Collections

Founded in 1949 at Yale University, The Human RelationsHRAF LOGOArea Files, Inc.(HRAF) is an organization that collects, indexes, and organizes books, book chapters, dissertations, and other publications on all aspects of cultural anthropology.

The eHRAF Collection of Ethnography is a Web-based, multi-cultural database for disciplines with an interest in cultural diversity. eHRAF contains over 300,000 pages of information on all aspects of cultural and social life with diverse topics ranging from religious beliefs, bringing up children, causes and cures of diseases, to economic and political behavior. Cultures included are mostly ethnic and indigenous groups from around the world. The annually-growing eHRAF database is unique in that all the full-text sources (books, articles, and dissertations) are numerically subject-indexed at the paragraph level to ensure precise retrieval of information.

It is important to note that cultures in the microfiche and electronic versions of the HRAF Collection of Ethnography are not covered in the same ways; the electronic versions include more recent source materials and not all the older sources are retained. The Libraries' collection of older HRAF materials on microfiche can be found in the Periodicals Room.

The eHRAF Collection of Archaeology is a Web-based, full-text database with information on prehistory of the world. The annually-growing eHRAF database is unique in that all the full-text sources (books, articles, and dissertations) are numerically subject-indexed at the paragraph level to ensure precise retrieval of information. The eHRAF Collection of Archaeology provides researchers and students access to archaeological materials for comparative studies within and across regions. Archaeological traditions include "classics" such as the Maya in Mesoamerica and the Dawenkou in China.
