Database News for March, 2003

Beilstein CrossFire, the database of record for organic chemistry, is now available to University of Arkansas students, faculty, and staff. Indexing journal articles, conference proceedings, and other publications back to the 18th century, Beilstein CrossFire allows sophisticated structure and reaction searching, links to associated chemical and physical properties, and detailed pharmacological and ecological data. Beilstein CrossFire includes:

• Over 8 million compounds
• Over 5 million chemical reactions
• Over 35 million associated chemical property and bioactivity records, including data describing pharmacodynamics and environmental toxicology, transport, distribution, and fate
• Over 750,000 abstracts and titles indexed from the primary organic chemical literature since 1980

Note that Beilstein CrossFire requires special software to run and is not available from a computer outside the University of Arkansas campus network.

During March, the Libraries have a trial of four Sage Full-Text Journal Collections. The SAGE Full-Text Collections offer full-text access to the most popular peer-reviewed journals in Communication Studies, Criminology, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology published by SAGE Publications and participating societies. The SAGE Full-Text Collections include more than 75 journals, 20,000 articles, book reviews, and editorials, with all the original graphics and tables.

During the trial, users will also have access to several social sciences databases from CSA, including Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, PsycINFO, EconLit, ERIC, and more. These indexes are linked to available full text from Sage journal collections.

During March, try out this new image collection. RLG Cultural Materials offers more than 140,000 digitized images and files from more than 50 museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions The Cultural Materials Database includes maps, photographs, objects, documents, art, sound, and motion files. The content reflects the richness of the human experience through time - high-quality digital versions of ancient maps, medieval manuscripts, handwritten letters, drawings, paintings, sound recordings, books, and moving images - from prestigious memory institutions. Bringing these exceptional materials together encourages new kinds of multidisciplinary research.

Published in Philadelphia from 1728 through 1800, The Pennsylvania Gazette was the most widely read colonial newspaper. It provides the reader with a first hand view of colonial America, the American Revolution and the New Republic, and offers important social, political and cultural perspectives of each of the periods. Thousands of articles, editorials, letters, news items and advertisements cover the Western Hemisphere, from the Canadian Maritime Provinces, through the West Indies and North and South America, giving a detailed glimpse of issues and lifestyles of the times. Also included is the full-text of such important writings such as: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Letters from a Farmer, Thomas Payne`s Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, etc.

The Libraries are pleased to make ASFA available on the Web. ASFA is aninternational database covering the science, technology, and management of marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. Input to ASFA is provided by a growing international network of information centers monitoring over 5,000 serial publications, books, reports, conference proceedings, translationsand limited distribution literature. ASFA is a component of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS).
