Center for Research Libraries:
Focus on Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Aqui MastheadDecember 10th marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UDHR was the first international recognition that all human beings have fundamental rights and freedoms and it continues to be a living and relevant document today. "Human Rights Day" on December 10th is the culmination of a year-long campaign to to focus on helping people everywhere to learn about their human rights.

The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) posted a number of collection overviews relating to human rights last year in their quarterly Focus newsletter. Highlighted collections include WWII era materials, the Bolivian newspaper Aquí, and late 20th century collections from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

New to the CRL? The Center for Research Libraries is a centralized collection of scholarly research materials in all disciplines. CRL is an international not-for-profit consortium of colleges, universities and libraries that makes available scholarly research resources to users everywhere. CRL is governed by the major research libraries of North America and is funded by fees, grants and contributions. Its outstanding collections include more than 3.5 million volumes of research materials rarely held in North American libraries. CRL offers large collections of foreign dissertations, newspapers, and microfilm sets. Because the University Libraries have membership in CRL, University of Arkansas students, faculty, and staff may borrow these collections through Interlibrary Loan.

CRL members are currently participating in a number of exciting digitization programs to bring rare and ephemeral materials as close as your keyboard. Some of these digital projects include:

Chinese Pamphlets

Chinese pamphlets: Political communication and mass education in the early period of the People's Republic of China

Chinese pamphlets, picture books and other propaganda issued during the early years of the People’s Republic of China between 1947 and 1954. Unlike the high-end, made-for-export propaganda held by many Western libraries, this is the “street literature” of the revolution: the comic books, leaflets and other ephemera distributed to the population of the provincial cities and villages.

Timbuktu Manuscripts

Slavery and Manumission Manuscripts of Timbuktu

From the Bibliothèque Commémorative Mama Haidara in Timbuktu, Mali, a collection of 19th century manuscripts relating to slavery and manumission in Timbuktu. The materials, in Arabic, provide documentation on Africans in slavery in Muslim societies.

Brazilian Government Documents

Brazilian Government Documents

Executive branch serial documents issued by Brazil's national government during the period between 1821 and 1993, and by its provincial governments from the earliest available for each province to the end of the Empire in 1889.

1848 French Pamphlets

Pamphlets and Periodicals of the French Revolution of 1848

Digital collection of pamphlets and periodicals from the French Revolution of 1848 held by Center for Research Libraries.

Digital South Asia Library

The Center has partnered with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) to assist with the project administration of the Digital Library for International Research (formerly American Overseas Digital Library). DLIR is an initiative to provide bibliographic and full-text access to the varied resources of the CAORC-sponsored overseas research centers and allied partners in Europe, the Near and Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and West Africa, covering both print collections and research collections in other media.

Science Databases Added to Web of Knowledge

ISI Web of Knowledge

Two important science resources are now available on the Web of Knowledge platform:

Taken together, these databases cover more than 15 million citations to the world's life science literature, including indexing and abstracting of more than 6000 journals, as well as other publication types.

By accessing these databases on the Web of Knowledge platform, researchers can take advantage of citation analysis tools and author institution records to discover related publications in novel ways. Biological Abstracts and Zoological Record can be searched alone or together with the multidisciplinary Web of Science file.

Nursing Database adds Full Text

The University Libraries are pleased to announce that the CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) database now includes full-text articles from more than 500 journals and trade magazines. Jerry Russell Civil War Collection

Book Jacket - The American Indian in the Civil WarThe Special Collections Department recently purchased the Jerry Russell book collection. The nearly 3000-title collection is comprised entirely of Civil War volumes, including both mainstream titles and limited press run vanity works. This book collection not only enhances the Library’s existing collection on the Civil War, but it also complements the Jerry Russell Papers, which itself contains much information on the war and Russell’s efforts for the preservation of military battlefields.

Book Jacket - Battle Cry of FreedomIn 1989, Russell founded HeritagePAC, the only political action committee devoted to Civil War battlefield preservation. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Arkansas with a degree in journalism and edited a number of newspapers during his long career, including the Heights Land Weekly Visitor (Little Rock) . Russell made his name in political consulting and is credited with bringing jingles to political advertisements in Arkansas. One of his first campaigns featured the jingle “Pin a Rose Me” for Robert Rosamond’s successful 1972 North Little Rock mayoral race and is now considered a classic.

Book Jacket - The Chronological Tracking of the American Civil WarThe Russell book collection is one of the most extensive Civil War collections in the state and will be of great value to researchers for its scope and scale of important resources on the Civil War.

Jerry Russell died in 2003. The book collection is currently being cataloged and will be available for research in the Special Collections Department. Researchers can browser titles in the book collection by searching the local subject heading "Jerry Russell Collection" in the library catalog, InfoLinks. The Jerry Russell Papers are currently unprocessed.
