GIS Software

Many people may not have need of a full-blown suite of GIS software, wanting, perhaps, simply to "view" data or run simple querries. ESRI is distributing ArcExplorer, a free "lightweight" GIS data viewer.  ArcExplorer may be used for for a variety of display, query, and data retrieval applications and supports a wide variety of standard data sources. Interested individuals may download ArcExplorer without charge.

A list of known free geospatial data viewers includes:

  • AccuGlobe - editing, modifying, analyzing, and viewing GIS data
  • ArcExplorer - basic mapping and spatial querrying
  • Autodesk® Express Viewer - viewing and printing Design Web Format™ (DWF™) drawings
  • Bentley View - open, view, interrogate and print design data
  • CartoMAP Viewer - viewing of SHP, MIF/MID, cgf, and DBISAM
  • dlgv32 - viewer for USGS data (DEM, DLG, DRG, DOQ) and USGS data formats (e.g. SDTS)
  • ER Viewer - basic viewing and saving of digital imagery
  • ERDAS ViewFinder - basic viewing, querrying, and manipulation of digital imagery
  • Forestry GIS (fGIS) - basic GIS data viewer, digitizer and shapefile (SHP) editing program for Windows®
  • FreeLook - basic viewing of digital imagery
  • GeoExpress View - basic viewing and saving of digital imagery
  • Geographic Explorer - basic viewing of MIF, SHP, TAB, DWG, DXF, DGN, TIFF, BMP & JPG files
  • Geomatica FreeView - data viewing and enhancement tool supporting many raster and vector formats
  • GeoMedia Viewer - basic viewing, analysis, and presentation of MIF, SHP, of Access files
  • Geospatial Explorer and other free GIS database tools
  • Map Maker Gratis - map editor and viewer
  • MapGuide Viewer - data viewer
  • MapInfo ProViewer - share MapInfo Professional® maps and analyses
  • MapWindow - manipulation, analysis, and viewing of geospatial data and associated attribute data in several standard GIS data formats
  • TatukGIS Viewer - views numerous raster (TIFF/GEOTIFF, MrSID®, BMP, SPOT, JPG) and vector (SHP, E00, MIF, DXF, DGN, TIGER) formats. Imports TatukGIS projects as well as most projects created with the ESRI ArcView® or MapInfo Professional®

The University of Arkansas Department of Computing Services offers geographic information systems (GIS) software through the ESRI Academic Site License. GIS software is available for research and educational use by University of Arkansas faculty and students, at low cost with an annual renewal, for installation on office and laboratory computers across campus. This opportunity is possible through the Arkansas Statewide academic site license with ESRI, with restrictions (i.e., no commercial use) as specified in the copyright and license agreements.

    • Extensions for ArcGIS 8.2 include: Geostatistical Analyst, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and ArcPress.

      Extensions for ArcView 3.2 include: Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and ArcPress.
