Welcome Letter | Table of Contents Our primary mission in the library is to assist students, faculty, staff, and other library users in locating, using, and interpreting library materials for their research, whether those materials are here in the building, in another local or state library, or elsewhere. In many ways, we are the human face on what can sometimes be a complex, frustrating, and intimidating library system. As a student employee, you will have many assignments, including filing, photocopying, data entry, word processing, keeping statistics, searching for books and journals, and helping library users. All of these projects and activities are important in serving our readers, but the most important element of your job will be to provide consistently high-quality, courteous service to the public. Thousands of questions are answered each year by library personnel in public and technical service areas, ranging from simple directions to complicated research problems. We do not expect you to be able to answer all questions. However, we do expect you to refer to your supervisor or the Reference Desk any questions you are hesitant to answer or about which you are uncertain. It is much better to refer questions to Reference than to give inaccurate information. Your job in the library is an important one to us and to library users who will ask you for help. Student employees acquire many marketable job skills while working in the library. Developing a good work record--relating to attendance and punctuality, independent judgment and need for supervision, attitude and relations with others, quantity and quality of work--can result in a valuable reference for future employment or graduate school. We hope that your own studies will benefit from your mastery of important library resources. We also encourage your input regarding your work assignment and the training for it. The staff welcomes you
to the library and hopes that your work experience
will be a rewarding one. As we tell our library users, if you have any
questions, just ask! Welcome Letter | Table of Contents
