On exhibition for the first time in the U. S., "Face to Face" featured more than 100 self-portraits collected by the late Ruth Borchard of London, who never paid more than 21 guineas for any one picture. Borchard's concept was to collect those works that captured the artist's introspection beyond the canvas, providing an insightful view into the artistic genre of self-identity.
"Face to Face" was displayed in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery and the Cynthia H. Coughlin Gallery at the Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas from August 21 to November 25, 2006. The University Libraries sponsored a reception for Katherine Hallgarten, whose mother Ruth Borchard collected the works, and Katherine's daughter Ruth on Thursday, October 5, 2006 from 5 to 7 p.m. At the reception, remarks were given by Mary Ann Greenwood, U of A Provost Bob Smith, University Libraries' dean Carolyn Allen and Katherine Hallgarten.
