Evalena Berry Papers

Research notes, 1980

Manuscript Collection 812

About the Collection

Time and the River, A History of Cleburne County, published in 1982 by Rose Publishing Company (Little Rock, Arkansas), was based on extensive research of archives, newspapers, county records, family records, and taped interviews with many Cleburne County residents. Evalena Hollowell Berry, a fourth generation native of Cleburne County Arkansas, is a great-granddaughter of Wesley C. Watkins, one of the founders of Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Contents of the Collection

The papers include two sets of rough drafts for Time and the River. Box 1 consists of handwritten and typed manuscripts. Most of these manuscripts have no chapter numbers; however, its arrangement approximates the chapters in Berry's book. Box 2 consists of typed drafts arranged by chapter. Box 3 consists of appendices, footnotes, and other material for Time and the River, as well as proofs for Berry's book, Sugar Loaf Springs, a history of a health resort in Cleburne County, Arkansas, published in 1985 by River Road Press (Conway, Arkansas).

Evalena Berry, of Little Rock, Arkansas, donated papers pertaining to her book, Time and the River, A History of Cleburne County, to Special Collections on July 12, 1987.

Prepared by Anthony J. Wappel, Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in October 1988.
