About
Herbert Blair
Tom Herbert
Blair (1908- ) was born in Lamar (Johnson County), Arkansas,
to John Herbert Blair and Anna Lee Webber Blair. Blair received
his master's degree in physical chemistry from Oklahoma Agricultural
and Mechanical College in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1934.
Blair began his career in the petroleum industry with the
Atlantic Refining Company in Dallas, Texas, where he worked
from 1938-1942. During World War II, Blair served as captain
in the Army Air Corps with the Central African Division of
the Air Transport Command. His duty was the reclamation of
disapproved aviation fuel stored at stations throughout Africa.
In 1949, he became a member of the U.S. Department of Defense's
Munitions Board, and by 1954, he was working for the Office
of the Assistance Secretary of Defense in the Petroleum Logistics
Division. While employed by the Defense Department, Blair
made a diligent, yet unsuccessful, effort to coordinate and
standardize fuel and other petroleum product usage among the
various military petroleum departments.
About the Collection
The papers pertain to Blair's interests in the petroleum and
refining industries, especially as they relate to the developments
in Africa. The papers contain correspondence and reports, and
the donor's arrangement has been preserved.
Processed by Anthony J. Wappel, Special Collections, University
of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in April 1989.
