JAMES MILLINDER
HANKS
James Millinder Hanks was born at Helena, Arkansas, in 1833. After graduating
from the University of Louisville he returned to Helena to practice law.
Hanks was a member of Congress for the First District of Arkansas from
1871 to 1873. In addition to his political career he also had banking and
farming interests. He was a devout and active Methodist. Hanks died in
May 1909.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Herbert W. Hill Jr., of Pullman, Washington, J. J. Doughtie of Memphis,
Tennessee, and Mary Stigall of Paducah, Kentucky, donated the James Millinder
Hanks Diaries to Special Collections on March 5, 1995.
The collection contains forty-five diaries dating from 1865 to 1907
and seven bound volumes of transcripts of the diaries for the period 1865-1896.
The remaining diaries were transcribed by Special Collections and the transcriptions
added to the collection. Added to the collection in 2002 in Box 7
are Mr. Hanks's copy of the Methodist Hymnal and a glass plate photograph
identified as "Mill, Anne Amelia Hanks, and John."
A microfilm copy of the diaries is held in the Periodicals Room. It
is on 7 reels with the call number Microfilm F 411. H2 1981.
