the Collection The
papers in this accession consist mostly of memorabilia collected
by Hays and his wife, Marion, documenting Hays's career and
numerous speaking engagements. Included are: a diary, letters,
and manuscripts written by Hays, along with essays and letters
written or collected by his son, Steele, his wife, Marion,
or his biographer, Cyril Bryant, 1919-1984; awards and certificates
presented to Hays, 1916-1982; Scrapbooks and scrapbook materials
which include printed articles both written by and pertaining
to Hays, political cartoons, and memorabilia, 1939-1991; photographs,
motion pictures, and sound recordings, mostly of Hays speaking
or attending various political, religious, and social functions,
1918-1982. All series have been arranged chronologically.

Diary kept by Hays in Washington D.C. during several weeks in
1919; letters written by or to Hays, members of his family,
or acquaintances; folder of letters from Hays acquaintances
collected by Hays biographer Cyril Bryant; topical file on U.S.-Panama
policy; essays by Hays and his son, Steele, and his wife, Marion;
map showing voting precincts within Hays's congressional district
and the balloting for the various elections in which he ran
between 1936 and 1950. The maps have been placed in the Special
Collections oversize manuscript drawer number 2. Box

4. Photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings, 1918-1982.
Boxes 5-7.
Photographs, primarily of Brooks Hays and his wife, Marion,
at ceremonial functions and speaking engagements. Also included
is an oversize group portrait of Hays's World War I army company,
portraits of Hays's friends and acquaintances, and a few family
portraits. Motion pictures consist of four negative prints of
Hays's reports to constituents ca. 1957 and two small reels
of home movie film taken by Hays at the 1957 presidential inaugural.
Sound recordings are of speeches delivered by Hays ca. 1971.
The photographs have been chronologically arranged and numbered
sequentially. Loose identification descriptions of several photographs
have been placed in the first folder of box 5 and bear the same
number assigned to the pertinent photograph. Oversize photographs,
along with the motion pictures and sound recordings, have been
removed to Box 7 or the Special Collections oversize manuscript
drawer number 2.
