Arley Woodrow was born June 5, 1895, in the Oklahoma Territory. He was state chairman of the Communist Party in Arkansas in 1940 and a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1936, Mayor of Little Rock in 1939, and presidential elector in 1940. In the 1940s he operated the Vanguard Book Shop in St. Louis, and wrote articles for several newspapers, including the Daily Worker, in support of the Communist party’s position on various issues. The FBI reports indicate that he practiced law in Mena, Arkansas, and in Missouri. Arley Woodrow died February 21, 1983.
Steven Smith, Professor in the Department of Communications, acquired the Arley Woodrow file from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with his research in Arkansas politics. He donated it to the University of Arkansas Libraries in August 2003.
