Margaret Smith Ross Papers (MC 1587)
Series 2. Court Records (Boxes 13-24).
This series consists of the original records of the Pulaski County Circuit Court. Materials date from the
early nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries. They are arranged alphabetically by subject. Within each
folder most criminal and civil records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the defendant.
Exceptions include murder cases, which are arranged alphabetically by name of the victim; and real estate,
which is organized by block number. Records pertaining to prominent Arkansas politicians have been
removed to Series 3, Subseries 1, and filed under the individual’s name. Records pertaining to slaves have
been removed to Series 3, Subseries 2. Materials related to the Civil War and Reconstruction have been
removed to Series 3, Subseries 3. Materials pertaining to the Pulaski City School District (1892) are in
the public schools folder (Box 24, Folder 5). Materials on burglary may be found in Box 61. Also,
indictments during 1883-1902 may be found in Box 61.
NOTE: Researchers are cautioned that many of the documents in this series were received in poor
condition. Efforts have been made to treat documents for mold, and to remove hazardous metal fastenings
such as pins. Nevertheless, researchers should handle these materials with care, and are encouraged to
wear masks and gloves (available from the reading room attendant).
