Margaret Smith Ross Papers (MC 1587)

Series 6. Images (Boxes 41-42)

This series includes photographs, drawings, and other images. Photographs in Subseries 1 are referenced in the picture index in Series 7, Subseries 8. The second subseries includes images of Ross and the staff of the Arkansas Gazette, Arkansas politicians and other historical figures, historic buildings and landscapes, depictions of historical events, and negatives. The third subseries is comprised of photographs by Walter Lemke. The fourth subseries includes photographs of the members and staff of the 1915 Arkansas House of Representatives. The fifth subseries includes a photograph album of Pine Bluff, slides, and prints of newspaper cartoons by George Fisher and Walter Lemke. Also included is an audio demo tape related to Arkansas’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The audio tape, “This Is Arkansas,” includes short segments on Isaac Parker, Jeff Davis, William Darby, and Huey Long speaking on behalf of Hattie Caraway.

Subseries 2. General Images

This subseries is divided into four sections. The first is images of people, including members of the Arkansas Gazette staff. The second is images of localities. The third is miscellaneous images, including artist’s depictions of historical events, steamboats, and markers and gravestones. The fourth consists of negatives, most of which are unidentified. Images in this subseries include photographs, as well as prints of engravings, paintings, and drawings. One of the photos of Orval Faubus is autographed. Also included are photos of memorials to Arkansas World War I hero Herman Davis, as well as his medals, the United States Distinguished Service Cross and the French Croix de Guerre.
