Margaret Smith Ross Papers (MC 1587)

Series 7. Index Cards (Boxes 43-60)

This series includes several series of notes and indexes on 4 x 5 inch index cards. Each box in this series contains four smaller boxes labeled A-D. As much as possible Ross’s original arrangement has been preserved; as a result, file title sequences are often random rather than alphabetical.

Subseries 1. Arkansas Gazette History

Ross used the materials in this subseries in writing her history of the Arkansas Gazette. She organized her notes chronologically, primarily based on the tenure of each editor of the Gazette. Each period includes cards on the following topics: Town and Territory; Gazette Office; Supplies/Equipment; Format; News Coverage; Politics and Policy; Special Features; Correspondents; Circulation/Advertising; Postal Service; Public Printing; Job Printing; Sideline Business; Staff; and Arkansas Press. The chronological sequence is interrupted between the years 1872 and 1876 by a set of biographical files on Reconstruction-era politicians.
