Modern Literature Club Records

Minutes, yearbooks, oral histories, and other records, 1926-1988

Manuscript Collection 891

INFORMATION ABOUT THE MODERN LITERATURE CLUB RECORDS

The Fayetteville Modern Literature Club is one of the oldest women's clubs in the city.  Founded in 1926 as a book study group within the Fayetteville chapter of the American Association of University Women, members of the organization gathered twice a month to review and critique readings in contemporary literature.

The papers consist of two series - administrative records, and records of club activities.  Administrative records include minutes, correspondence, club histories written by Eloise Baerg, lists of presidents and their activities, an incomplete collection of yearbooks, and photographs.  Records of club activities include reading lists and book reviews.  However, the majority of items in this series consist of taped oral histories of club members prepared by ten selected club members in 1987.  Each interviewee was questioned about their own lives, Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas, modern literature, and the history of the Modern Literature Club.

For further information, see the finding aid for the Modern Literature Club of Fayetteville (MC 1190).

Patricia R. Collier, Vice-President of the Modern Literature Club of Fayetteville (Washington County), Arkansas, donated the club's records to Special Collections on April 26, 1988.

Processed by Anthony J. Wappel, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in December 1988.
