The W. S. Ray letters were donated to Special Collections by V. Lane Wharton, Raleigh, North Carolina, on September 9, 2000.
 
W. S. Ray of DeQueen, Arkansas, and Richard Wharton (1843-1935) were soldiers  in “I” Company, 154th Tennessee Senior Regiment, Army of Tennessee ca 1864-1865.  For more information on W. S. Ray see Manuscript Resources for the Civil War; Entry #136, William Stephan Ray Memoir.

The collection contains photocopies of three letters, 1905-1906, from W. S. Ray to Richard Wharton.
