Giving to the Libraries

The Libraries’ Challenge Today

Walton Reading RoomIn light of the goal set by Chancellor John A. White of increasing enrollment to 22,500 students by 2010, while strengthening research and instructional support for undergraduate, Honors, and graduate programs, the UA Libraries must look more and more to the private sector to fulfill the Libraries’ mission of meeting the needs of academic programs on campus and of reaching our goal of becoming a nationally competitive research library.  Gifts can make all the difference between an adequate library and an excellent one.

Growth Through the Years

The library has evolved over the years from a very small collection of under 4,000 volumes on the second floor of Old Main—with only a student librarian in charge—to the five full-service research libraries on campus today. Read more . . .

The Importance of Giving

Dear AllenCarolyn Allen, Dean of Libraries, says, “A nationally competitive research university must have resources available to students and faculty that will give them an academic edge.  The generosity and vision of private donors are a tremendous support in providing information—whether in print or through electronic databases—for students and faculty today and for future generations.

Despite numerous advances in collections and services in our Libraries in recent years (see Annual Reports), we must continue to acquire more resources and provide more services to make our university truly competitive with our peers. When students and faculty are deliberating whether or not to come to the University of Arkansas, a key factor in that decision will be whether or not the University will be able to provide the library resources they need to support their research interests.”

The Libraries and the Campaign for the 21st Century

The Libraries benefited greatly from the Campaign for the 21st Century, raising more than $39 million in pledges and endowments.  Read more . . .
